Provigil usage

Provigil (Generic Provigil®, Alertec®, Modalert®) is an analeptic drug for the treatment of narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, jet-lag, obstructive sleep apnea/hyponea and excessive daytime sleepiness associated with obstructive sleep apnea.

How to take Provigil

Take Provigil medication by mouth with or without food, usually once daily in the morning or as directed by your doctor.
Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
Do not take it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended.
Use this medication exactly as prescribed to get the most benefit from it.

Provigil side effects

Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome: headache; infection; nausea, decreased appetite, diarrhea; chills; dry mouth; runny nose; sore throat; nervousness; anxiety; dizziness; insomnia; depression; numbness and tingling.
These are some of the more uncommon but serious side effects, stop taking modalert and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately should they occur: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); irregular heartbeats; low or high blood pressure; shortness of breath.
Modalert may be habit forming. You should discuss the abuse and dependence potential of modalert with your doctor.
Do not stop taking Modalert without first talking to your doctor. Your doctor may want to gradually lower the dose of the medication before stopping treatment.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Precaution

Some medical conditions may interact with Provigil. Tell your health care provider if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you: left ventricular hypertrophy (enlarged left heart ventricle); chest pain, irregular heartbeats, or other symptoms of mitral valve prolapse due to central nervous system stimulant use; high blood pressure; angina (chest pain); If you take blood pressure medications; or if you have recently had a heart attack ; abused medicines called stimulants or street drugs; a history of mental illness; kidney disease; or liver disease.
It is not known whether Provigil will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take Provigil without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether it passes into breast milk. If you are older than 65 years of age, you may be more likely to experience side effects from Modalert
Sleep disorders may decrease your ability to react quickly. Though Provigil helps keep you awake, you still may not be able to perform tasks requiring alertness safely (e.g., driving). This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Avoid alcoholic beverages.

Provigil drug interactions

Before taking Provigil, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAO inhibitor) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or phenelzine (Nardil); a tricyclic antidepressant such as clomipramine (Anafranil) or desipramine (Norpramin); another CNS stimulant such as amphetamine-dextroamphetamine (Adderall), methylphenidate (Ritalin, Methylin, Metadate ER, Concerta), pemoline (Cylert), and others; phenytoin (Dilantin); carbamazepine (Tegretol); phenobarbital; rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane); ketoconazole (Nizoral); itraconazole (Sporanox); cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune); theophylline (Theolair, Theochron, Theo-Bid, Theo-Dur, Elixophyllin, Slo-Phyllin, and others); warfarin (Coumadin); diazepam (Valium); or propranolol (Inderal).
Should you be taking one or more of the drugs listed above you may not be able to take Provigil, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during your treatment.
Provigil may decrease the effects of hormonal methods of birth control including birth control pills and depot and implantable formulations (e.g., Norplant, Depo-Provera).
It is recommended to use a second, nonhormonal form of birth control while taking Provigil and for one month after stopping Provigil, if prevention of pregnancy is desired.
It is very important to check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products, diet aids) because they may contain ingredients (e.g., pseudoephedrine, ephedra/ma huang) that could increase your heart rate or blood pressure. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products.
Avoid drinking large amounts of beverages containing caffeine (e.g., coffee, tea, cola). Caffeine can increase the side effects of this medication.
Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Provigil.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose of Provigil as soon as you remember as directed by your doctor. A missed dose taken late in the waking day may cause insomnia. If you don't remember until it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

How to store Provigil

Store Provigil at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
